Here’s a summary of Tech News & Trends:

🔵 Four Canadian school boards (affiliated with +1,000 schools) are suing Meta, Snapchat, and TikTok for $3B. The lawsuit alleges that the apps have had detrimental effects on students, are “negligently designed for compulsive use” and have fundamentally altered the way children think, behave, and learn.

🔵 KOSA was reintroduced to the House. The bill seeks to equip parents, protect kids, and keep big tech accountable. Nothing has been passed in the US to protect kids online for 25 years. We need this now more than ever!

🔵 TikTok is working on a new photo/text app to rival Instagram. It’s currently known as “TikTok Notes.” There’s no release date yet, but once we know more details, we will be the first to let you know!

🔵 A group of brave 10th-grade girls raised concerns to their school regarding male peers abusing AI to generate and distribute sexually explicit images of them. Sadly, little has been done to prevent this from happening again, both at the school and in our country. Our Guide to Deepfakes and AI shares 15 tips for families:

🔵 Maryland passed the US’s second Age Appropriate Design Code, following California. The Maryland Kids Code aims to prohibit social media, video games, and other platforms from tracking individuals under 18 from employing manipulative tactics, such as auto-playing videos or flooding children with notifications.

🔵 In response to a WSJ article by Julie Jargon and subsequent parent outcry, Snapchat changed their friend-ranking “solar system” feature to be off by default for Snapchat+ subscribers. But the feature is still there, causing anxiety and drama for teens. During a time when their lives need more stability, Snap once again proves they ARE social media and part of the problem.

Remember #delayistheway! Most of the best things for childhood are almost always analog.
